Chickenstock Festival 2021

Chickenstock festival is a family-friendly music festival in Stockbury, Kent. Running from the 22nd to the 25th of July, it boasts an incredible line-up of folk/americana music from both newer, younger bands as well as some older favourites.

The festival, first started in 2018, has only ran for two years thus far but has already grown from 300 to a whopping 3000 capacity, evolving past the ‘large garden parties’ that it began as. However, named after a combination of the village it resides in and the popular pet, it still maintains its local, family atmosphere to this day. It stocks alcohol from local breweries as well as even working with a local animal charity, Happy Pants, in order to bring with it a petting zoo for the younger attendees (all of which get in for free, by the way).

Sustainability is also a big focus of the festival, trying their hardest to not use plastic whenever possible, even for their vendors. Bringing your own, non-glass cup is recommended though they will also be selling reusable souvenir cups too. Also available will be free water points as well as multiple recycling stations.

Given the year we have all had, the festival is very clear and enforcing of their Covid 19 guidelines, all which can be found on their website. As a gesture of thanks to all of those on the front lines too, the festival is offering a £5 bar giftcard for all NHS staff upon entry.

Now, onto the incredible line-up.

Starting off the festivities on the Friday night are Cornwalls own acoustic folk band, 3 Daft Monkeys. Having formed not long after the turn of the century they have played great gigs and festivals throughout the UK and Europe, including Glastonbury, Folk Segovia, Lorient Intercleltic Festivals and Bearded Theory. They were also invited to play the Eden Project and the 2008 BBC Proms by the next day’s headliner, as well as being regular support for the Levellers. Oh, and hundreds of thousands of streams on those sorts of sites are always a great sign, too!

Saturday headliner Show of Hands are an older acoustic duo formed way back in 1986. Known for their songs that address social issues such as Arrogance, Ignorance and Greed and Cousin Jack, the band found massive success among the ‘rural poor’. The band have found huge success over their 30+ album career, and were even voted ‘Greatest Devonians Ever’ by a poll run in Devon. I feel like Agatha Christie and Muse have something to say about that, but SoH more than earnt their spot!

Finally, to close out the weekend are a Nashville band that should really need no introduction, Hayseed Dixie. Coining the term Rockgrass for themselves the band first got famous after their bluegrass cover of AC/DC’s Highway to Hell got a massively great reception. The band’s debut album was a covers album chocked full of hard rock songs played in their style and sold over 250,000 copies in the US alone in its first two years. The band have produced a further 15 albums since then containing either more fantastic covers or some of their satirical original work. Known for their fantastic live shows too, this will not be one to miss!

The full Line-up is down below but joining them are the likes of Jamie Williams, Morganway and Matt Black. The link to buy tickets is down below, but at £79, with an additional £20 for camping, you can’t really go wrong at all! As stated before, U18s go for free and it even allows dogs!
