Emily Lockett: Single Review

Single – Do You Wanna Go Out?

Emily Lockett is a young singer/songwriter from Stoke-On-Trent in England. Blending together a great mix of pop, country and americana that is unfortunately not heard anywhere near enough of in Britain. She has released 3 Eps so far, though only one is on streaming sites so far, all to pretty massive acclaim, winning numerous local awards and scoring very high praise in the National Song Academy Young Songwriter competition for her debut single, Reflection of Me. Her 3rd EP, Paint the Town Red, is available in physical form now (a full review is coming soon!) with two of the songs from it, Front Porch and That Girl already release online. A third song from it, Do You Wanna Go Out?, is set to be released on the 13th of this month, and it is this one that I shall be checking out today. I love all of this kind of music so I am pretty damn excited for this!

Straight away it opens on a fantastic soft rock/country feel, the acoustic guitar chords perfectly accentuated by the fairly clean electric lead tone and some light background vocals from Emily. It somehow reminds me of both early Taylor Swift and Amaryllis by Shinedown, two things I am a huge fan of. The vocals are massively country in the best possible way, making the song sound even more like the best eras of the likes of Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus. However, I don’t want to take anything away from the instrumentation, the guitars sound great, the tone almost Bryan Adams-esque, and the subtle piano adds so much to the rhythm.

The verse and pre build perfectly into a great, open-sounding, hugely catchy chorus, the instrumentation not changing all too much but the vocals are great and easy to sing along to, making me feel like it’ll go down a storm live! It’s honestly one of the best choruses I’ve heard in a while, it fits into the genre perfectly and the lyrics are great and full of emotional, a great love song.

A short bridge after the second chorus leads to an awesome moment where most of the instrumentation drops way down, building back up with a great drumroll and some chords before it all drops out again, leaving just a simple stomping sound and the vocals for the first part of the final chorus, adding some great depth to the song and sounding really awesome. It all quickly builds back up again, leading to another full, huge sounding chorus. We also get a brief but great little guitar solo during the outro, giving off massive country vibes and again fitting the song perfectly. It then ends with a couple of final, beautiful lines from Emily before it fades out.

Overall: I really loved this. As I said at the start, I don’t hear nearly enough of this music over here in England, it’s at a point where you have to actively search out stuff that is even slightly country as it just isn’t much of a thing out here, so this has automatically become some of my favourite new music I have heard so far in the short time I have been doing these reviews. It is a fantastic song in its own merit though, a catchy, emotional yet fun country-pop song, and one that I can see becoming a huge hit when it lands on streaming platforms later this week. I would be keeping a close eye on Emily Lockett if I were you (I know I will be), I have a feeling she will become a HUGE megastar in the next couple of years if she keeps putting out music of such high quality!

You can pre-save the song on Spotify so that you can hear it immediately here.
